Researchers have found that Ashkenazi Jewish people shared the same genetic markers coming from their maternal lineage. Those groups are called mtDNA haplogroups. There are 4 groups for the Ashkenazi Jewish. There are:

  • N1b
  • K1a1b1a
  • K1a9
  • K2a2a

If you take a genetic test, you can know if your mtDNA haplogroup matches with one of the 4 mtDNA haplogroups. The test lab 23andme offer a genetic test package which includes the testing of the mtDNA (maternal) haplogroup. After ordering a kit, you receive a test tube in which you spit a bit of saliva before you send it back to the lab.
